Strategies for Gender-Inclusive Language
By way of practical sessions, students are shown different ways to avoid discriminatory text with regard to written language, especially in relation to gender issues. Examples are given of formulas that can be useful to avoid using sexist and stereotyped forms. The sessions also serve to exchange opinions and discuss the capacity of language to change society and vice versa.
AIMED TOWARDS
People who work in government agencies, companies or organisations, and write texts of different types (administrative, creative, etc.).
GENERAL OBJECTIVE OF THE COURSE
This course aims to present, analyse and resolve situations of discriminatory language in written and oral texts, in the gender field.
CONTENT
The content is structured in five units, each of which lasts approximately two and a half hours. The sessions combine group work, reflections and practical activities that facilitate interaction.
The content has been selected according to its usefulness and applicability in the workplace mainly.
The content is made up of:
- Unit 1: Social aspects of non-sexist language, 8 March and the legal framework.
- Unit 2: Visibility resources (1): Full double forms.
- Unit 3: Visibility resources (2): Full and abbreviated double forms.
- Unit 4: Avoidance resources: Generic forms and gender-neutral strategies.
