New Features and Changes in IEC Grammar and Spelling
New Features and Changes in IEC Grammar and Spelling
In 2017 the Institut d’Estudis Catalans published Ortografia catalana and Gramàtica de la llengua catalana (GIEC). The GIEC was published almost one hundred years after the first standard Catalan grammar, Pompeu Fabra`s Gramàtica catalana, of 1918, in force until today.
In this course we will analyse the new developments from a theoretical and practical perspective, in order to study and consolidate some of the most relevant approaches proposed by the IEC.
AIMED TOWARDS
Students of general courses (face-to-face or online) who want to extend their knowledge; former C1 and C2 students and employees of government agencies or organisations, who need to keep abreast of the latest developments of the GIEC.
GENERAL OBJECTIVE OF THE COURSE
To know the GIEC and the changes it proposes, together with spelling, starting especially from what is most important: going from correctness to appropriateness, description to prescription, and bearing in mind the geographical and functional variety. The course aims to give information about the main features of the GIEC and to provide tools for its interpretation. In addition, it also aims to disseminate some new grammar and spelling features.
CONTENT
The contents are structured in five units, each of which lasts approximately two hours.
Unit 1
We will compare the IEC’s Gramàtica de la llengua catalana (GIEC) with Pompeu Fabra’s Gramàtica catalana, published in 1918. We will talk about the features of the GIEC and the new concepts it uses (appropriate, preferred, preferential, usual, common, restricted, general, residual...). Through various activities we will work on specific cases that give examples of appropriateness or the changes.
Unit 2
We will work on some prepositions and expressions and look at elision and alternation of prepositions, in some time expressions and in the preposition before the direct object, and the use of per and per a.
Unit 3
We will analyse some weak pronoun combinations and look at informal and colloquial oral and written uses.
Unit 4
We will look at some changes in verb usage, such as unergative verbs, the verb haver-hi, psychological verbs and the differences between the verbs ser and estar.
Unit 5
We will work on the relevant new spelling rules. We will discover other tools that can make our work easier: Word dictionary, forums and blogs. We will also take the opportunity to show applications and other language resources to learn and practice.
